For my piece I intend to arrange them to make a family tree of trees I will use a large mat board and have them all in the tree from generation to generation.

  1. So you're incorporating your own family into this? Are you focusing on the tree images or the family element? Seems like tying these trees together to convey historic continuity but also displaying a personal connection might be something to think about.

  2. I like this idea - for your final project? If so, you may need to make more trees and figure out how it's going to look with them being in tiny frames on a much larger tree (does the tree that ties them all together have a face/personality too??)

  3. I feel like the family tree idea has been done so many times it would be great if you could somehow create your own spin on it and change it up to something more personal and unique.

  4. Is this your final project idea? And I agree with Darcey, this is something that has been done again and again so make sure you put your own style into it.

  5. I agree with some of the comments above, the idea is good, just make sure you put your own personality into it.

  6. Family trees are interesting ways to explore family history as well as social landscapes in generations past. There is also a wealth of symbolism that could be incorporated into your piece to further communicate the intended effects of family trees. For my calligraphy class last semester I built my own family tree that had the appearance of a cross cut tree stump with my family's lineage transcribed directly onto the wood.

  7. I feel like I need more information before I can really say anything. I'm also confused... is this a continuation of your last project with the tree faces? I think it sounds interesting so far though. I'm not entirely certain what imagery you have in mind, but it could be nice to take it out of the rectangular presentation. I feel like family trees go in so many different direction with a lot of character... so it could be nice to demonstrate that visually.

  8. Hi Sam.

I like that you seem to be continuing your exploration of the previous project and are interested in something personal to you.

Seems like the resource images you posted are a tad obvious and purely functional. Do you need to incorporate everyone in your lineage? Seems like using everyone who begat everyone else will make for a busy composition very quickly. What if you concentrated on a few select family members who have made an impact on your life. Might they somehow form a larger whole? How do you make the viewer care about families that are not theirs? Would the image be purely functional? It might be best to approach this as a composite and just jump in and start layering to see where the accident takes you. That might work. I like to approach every image as a poem, it helps me to avoid the cliche. Do you have access to the images in high resolution to use in Photoshop? Really need them before Monday morning if possible as we want to hit the ground running.
